Pilgrimage to the mass of Beatification of Father Solanus Casey
Part 5 – What we can learn from Blessed Solanus Casey.
To complete this series, let’s take a look at Blessed Solanus’s spirituality. What impressed me the most is the way Father Solanus treated everyone with great care and compassion. Because Father Solanus had difficulty in his studies, he was ordained a Simplex priest. That means he could not hear confessions nor preach theology. It must have been humiliating to Barney to have this happen to him but instead of being bitter, he embraced the humiliation and strives to serve God in whatever way he could. This actually ended up being a blessing because he did not have the burden of responsibilities that a parish priest does. He had lots of time to spend listening to people.
He set aside his own needs to be available at all times of the day or night.
People came from all over to see him. His wisdom, compassion, and healing touch drew many people to him. He counseled people who came to his door. He also gave them food, encouragement, and instructed them to, “Thank God ahead of time. His plans for us are always the best.” God answered Father Solanus’s prayers.
He exhibited incredible faith and holiness. He is a wonderful example of how an ordinary person can live an extraordinary faithful life.
Blessed Father Solanus Casey encourages me to be a better person, to strive to be more present to people, and to have complete trust and faith in God and his plans for me and my loved ones.
