Pilgrimage to the mass of Beatification of Father Solanus Casey
Part 2 – Visit to the Solanus Casey Center
On our way to the Ford stadium for the mass of Beatification of Father Solanus Casey we stopped at the Solanus Casey Center. Fortunately, we were early and had the privilege of going through with just a medium size crowed verses the large crowed that had gathered by the time we left.
One thing I had not realized is that Blessed Solanus’s body is at the center. We were giving cards to write our prayer intentions on. Near his body was a basket where we could leave the cards and pause for a few moments and pray. It is hard to put into words but I felt a great sense of peace and gratitude as I presented my petitions in prayer to Blessed Solanus. Father Solanus was not a discerner of persons. He treated everyone the same with great patience and compassion. He believed that God answers all our prayers and that we should, “Thank God Ahead of Time”.
Next, it was onto the chapel. It was fairly large. None of my pictures turned out because it was raining heavily outside and I don’t think they had the lights on. With the lights off though, that created a very prayerful atmosphere. We had time to sit and prayer. It was cool to see the many Capuchin monks with their long robs and hoods praying.
Blessed Solanus had such a gentle spirit that even animals responded to him. Birds would perch on his hand and one time he calmed a swarm of bees by removing the extra queen that had upset the hive.
Playing the Violin was one of Blessed Solanus’s favorite hobbies. However, he was not very good at it. No one wanted to hear his playing so he would go in the chapel and play for Jesus.
Here is a picture of Solanus’s family. He was one of 16 children. Two of his brothers were also priests.
Lastly, I would like to share a picture of the stain glass window from the old St. Patrick church that the Casey family may have attended.
I highly recommend a visit to the Solanus Casey center in Detroit Michigan. It is very beautiful and full of lots of information about Blessed Solanus.
